Aberdeen: The memorial service for Edmund F. Murray, 81, of Aberdeen will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 2010, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., in Aberdeen, with Pastor Gary Compton officiating.

Military rites by Sidney L. Smith Post No. 24.

Ed's wishes were to be cremated, so there will be no visitation.

Inurnment will be at a later date at Norway Lutheran Cemetery in Glenham.

Edmund died Thursday, June 10, 2010, at his home due to complications from cancer.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

The family prefers memorials to the Salvation Army or the Roncalli Nearly New Store.

Edmund F. Murray was born April 18 1929, in Minneapolis, Minn. Ed graduated from West High School in 1947. After graduation, he attended the University of Minnesota before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. During his Air Force career, he flew jet fighters as a navigator during the Korean War, and flew surveillance aircraft during the Vietnam War.

Ed married Jane Agnes Greer on April 16, 1955. During Ed's 21 years of military service, he and his family lived in various places in the U.S. Including two years in England. Ed graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the College of Great Falls in 1966.

After retirement from the Air Force in 1971 at the rank of major, Ed and his family moved to Aberdeen. Ed then worked for the state of South Dakota for an additional 17 years, retiring in 1991. His beloved wife Jane passed away in July 2004.

After retirement, Ed was able to make more time for his passion for golf, as well as volunteer work at Avera St. Luke's.

Preceding him in death was his mother, Myrtle Murray, and wife, Jane.

His memory lives on with his two sons: Timothy J. Murray of Aberdeen and Stephen (Mitzi) Murray of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; three granddaughters: Sara Jane Murray, Heather Lee-Jolena Murray and Nicole Dawn Murray; and three great-grandchildren: Kayla Weis, Joshua Murray and Jaeden Murray.

Ed will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

We worked with your dad at the Dept. of Social Services many years ago. We enjoyed working together and sharing a cup of coffee with him in the break room and seeing him after he retired when he volunteered at the hospital.
