1932 - 2021
Edna Serna Ortega our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
Edna was born to Genaro and Juanita Serna on April 29, 1932 born and raised in the deep Westside of San Antonio, Texas. She always would strive for excellence. Edna was an honor student and became captain of Blue Jackets at Lanier High School. She graduated at the young age of 16. Having a passion for cosmetology she earned her spot as a beauty operator at Joske’s Department Store. As a member of the LULAC Council and Damas de Bejar, she found her calling for helping children, the elderly, and the poor. Edna had a beautiful smile and a love of dance and music. With hard work and desire she opened up her own beauty salon until she found her Charro Completo which changed her path completely. She married the love of her life on July 18, 1970 and were married for 49 years. She enjoyed attending Charreadas helping the Escaramuza (girls riding team), and ballet folklorico groups. Which brought out the Mexican tradition that runs so deep within our family. Together with her husband they were able to witness 3 generations of Charreria and were extremely proud; more than anything they adored their grandchildren.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Genaro and Juanita Serna; husband, Gilberto L. Ortega; sister, Judy S. Paez and grandson, Jimmy Mauricio. She is survived by her loving children, Gerardo (Yolanda), Cynthia Escobedo, Loretta Galindo, Gilberto Ortega II, Lupita Ortega Garza (Demo), Rose Paez (Tommy); brother in law, Basilio L. Ortega (Concha); 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Though her last days of life were in the hospital this BEAUTIFUL LADY, OUR MOTHER was never alone and joined all her loved ones in heaven at peace. Our family would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the nurses at Baptist Medical Center for all their love, care and support they gave our mother.
Visitation will begin on Monday, June 28 at 6:00 P.M. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. at the Angelus Chapel. Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, June 29, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Francis X Cabrini Catholic Church. Interment will follow in San Jose Burial Park.
