WILLIAMSBURG - Edra "Mickey" Galligan, 75, of Williamsburg, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, peacefully at home with her husband at her side. Diabetes and strokes eventually took their toll and the body just wore out. She is now with her mother, father and sister in heaven.
Mickey was born in Shiawassee County on Nov. 9, 1930, the daughter of Charles and Elsie (Huggins) McCombs. She married Albert "Jim" Galligan on April 14, 1951, at Sacred Hear Catholic Church in Elk Rapids.
Mickey taught school at Stricker School in Grand Traverse County, Flushing Community in Flushing, Carmen School District in Flint and Whittemore-Prescott Schools in Whittemore.
She lived in Williamsburg for the past 31 years. During her lifetime Mickey served on the following boards, commissions, organizations and clubs, Cub Scout Den Mother in Flint and Hale, volunteer secretary for Fr. Fred at the All Faiths Chapel, the Elk Rapids School Board, Township Supervisor for Whitewater Township, the Township Park Board and the Michigan Township's Association. She also served the Rural Fire Board, Bata Transportation, the Commission on Aging Board, the Republic Women's Club and R.S.V.P., all of Grand Traverse County.
Mickey will always be remembered for being a great wife and mother. She was known for her honesty, holding her own, being "one tough lady," and for standing up for the rights of others.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, A. Jim Galligan of Williamsburg; two daughters, Dawn (Vinney) Lewis of Columbus, Ohio, and Ann (Michael) Couturier of Williamsburg; three sons, Michael (Laurie) Galligan of Grand Haven, Timothy (Laureen) Galligan of Traverse City and Matthew (Maribeth) Galligan of Clarkston; and 10 grandchildren.
Mickey was preceded in death by her parents, sister and one niece.
A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at 11 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski as presider.
Memorials may be given in Mickey's name to the Commission on Aging, the Father Fred Foundation or Munson Hospice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home.
