Not sure what to say?

Deepest condolences to Sylvia and her family as Ned passed away to another world. I was his postdoc in 90-93. Ned was very kind and caring person. He offered me a position in his lab as I arrived a fresh PhD from London England. I was given the task of running his surface Chemistry and calorimetry laboratory. I learned a lot from Ned not only about chemistry but also about life. He was an advisor who gave encouragement and fatherly advice to his students and postdoctoral colleagues. RIP Ned....

Dear Sylvia and Family, I am saddened by Ned's passing. I so appreciated knowing him - and you, Sylvia - through Durham Friends Meeting. Many of my years there were difficult, and the kindness you showed to my family and the wisdom offered are remembered fondly and often. May your memories of dear Ned bring you comfort. Be well.

I was very sad to learn of Ned's passing. He was a world class scientist and scholar, but more importantly a decent and compassionate person. The time I spent working under his guidance while a postdoc was transformational. Ned remains the single greatest teacher and mentor I've had in my lifetime. I hope that Sylvia and his children find solace in the enormous impact he had on so many colleagues, friends, and students.

Ned, you were a kind, loving and generous person who meant so much to so many. We miss you, and feel blessed to have known you. - Tim, Sandy, Jeremy and Benjamin

Professor Arnett and his wife Sylvia were so welcoming to us when we joined Duke Chapel. They were pillars of the congregation, organizing meals for the homeless and encouraging lively discussions during adult forum. They walked a powerful, faithful walk!
