Overcoming Obstacles
What people remember about Edward Beyea was that he was always telling jokes. "Sometimes he laughed so hard you thought he would fall out of the chair," said Irma Fuller, his nurse's aide for 14 years. Mr. Beyea, 42, needed full- time care for the last 21 years, ever since a diving accident left him a quadriplegic.

But Mr. Beyea refused to be overcome by his disability, his mother said. "He said right from the start, 'I'll beat it, Mom,' " said his mother, Janet Beyea. "And he did, up to a point."

He learned how to type using a stick that he operated with his mouth, and worked as a computer programmer for Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield in the World Trade Center.

Even at home in his apartment on Roosevelt Island, Mr. Beyea was always busy. "It kept his mind off himself," Ms. Fuller said. He would play computer golf, listen to music and read. He had a special tray that made it possible for him to read in bed.

The tray was rigged up by Abe Zelmanowitz, his colleague and friend for 12 years. Mr. Zelmanowitz refused to leave Mr. Beyea's side after the terror attack, as they waited on the 27th floor for the rescue workers who could not get there in time.

Remembering Edward on the 20th anniversary of 9/11....

To the friends, family, and loved ones of Edward F. Beyea. Im a sophomore at Shanley High School in Fargo, North Dakota. Were studying 9/11 in religion class and I am specifically researching Edward and his life. His life story is incredibly inspiring and touching to me. He really seemed like a light of life, hope, and happiness to those around him and I want you to know that he will not be forgotten. Thank you for keeping his memory alive. God bless.

Edward did indeed overcome obstacles and left us with a great life lesson. I like how he used his sense of humor to get through life. I pray today for his many friends, co-workers and family. We will never forget. Much love from Texas,

I am researching Edward for an assignment in Religion class and found his story especially touching. Sending prayers and my condolences to his family and everyone's lives he has touched.

Thinking of you on the fast-approaching 15th anniversary of the horrific event that took your light from us, Ed. May God Bless you, I think of you and your family often. My son Ryan loved having your sister, Pam, as his teacher in Hammondsport, NY..I hope he has found you in Heaven. God Bless and Rest In Peace.

hi

Remembering Ed. Beyea today. Edward and I went to programming school together a very long time ago. Some people you just never forget. They are extraordinary examples of what it really means to be alive and human. They remind you how far it is that you have to go to be the person you should be. Some, like Eddie, suffer to even be alive but you would never know it by their demeanor. They live their lives with such style and grace and project such warmth and wit. All these years later at times...

Dear Beyea family, I, too, am a quadriplegic due to a diving accident. The story of Ed and Abe and their friendship has always stayed with me. Every anniversary of that tragic day I think about Ed and Abe and feel both sadness and joy. Love outshines hate. Edward Beyea and Abe Zelmanowitz will never be forgotten by me. My condolences to you. Thank you for sharing Ed with the world.
