Edward Helms Obituary

Edward S. Helms, Jr. CHARLOTTE - Edward S. Helms, Jr., "Ed", 83 years old, of Charlotte, went home to be with The Lord peacefully on Saturday, June 30, 2013 after health complications. Born January 26, 1930 in Charlotte NC, to the late Edward Stewart Helms and Lila Martin Helms. He attended Tech High School in Charlotte NC and retired from Crescent Resources, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, after a career of over 45 years, where he held the office of vice president and treasurer. Married on July 14, 1955, Ed was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Ruth Hill Helms, of 58 years. Ed was an exemplary loving father to their son Bill Helms and daughter, Cindy Helms Shepard and her husband, Gary, and their two children Brian Edward Shepard and daughter, Katherine Lynn Shepard. He is also survived by his brother Gene Helms and his sister, Doris Helms Vaughan. His nieces and nephews were Ricky Helms, Gary Helms, Lisa Helms, Robin Vaughan, and Susie Vaughan. Ed proudly served his country during the Korean War conflict and was also very active in the Gideon Ministry for well over 20 years. His passion was his work in the prison ministry meeting with the inmates and sharing the love of The Lord with them on a weekly basis. He and Ruth were long-time active members of First Baptist Church in Charlotte where they were both active in the choir and volunteer ministry. Ed served for a number of years as a Sunday School teacher, a Boy Scout troop leader, and served on the Wednesday night meal ministry. McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park located at 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC, will be handling the arrangements. The visitation will be Wednesday, July 3, 2013 10:30 am - 11:30am with the service immediately following in the chapel. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. Our family wishes to thank the staff of assisted living at Wilora Lake Lodge for their care and compassion to our husband and father.
