Obituary

The son of Edward Herrmann says the "Gilmore Girls" star and Tony Award-winner has died.

Rory Herrmann said that his father died Wednesday in a New York City hospital where he was being treated for brain cancer. Edward Herrmann was 71.

The towering, 6-foot-5 actor with the melodious voice made his mark on stage, on screen and as the narrator of a number of documentaries.

He also provided the voice for Franklin D. Roosevelt in Ken Burns' documentary series "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," which aired on PBS earlier this year.

I am just grieving his passing as I realized his death was real on a "Year in the life 0 f the Guilford Girls

This past Saturday's back-to-back airing of REDS and the 1974 version of THE GREAT GATSBY on one of my movie cable channels (not to mention the magnificent, Senior Series 1935 Packard convertible sedan I'd admired at a car show near me several hours earlier) reminded me of how much I'm still missing Edward Herrmann nine years after his passing. It was a tremendous honor and pleasure to know him personally through our long mutual involvement in the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance car shows...

My daughter gave me the 7 Seasons of Gilmore Girls on DVD. I watched them so much that I had to buy another set. I loved the show and Edward Herman was a gentleman´s gentleman. I was sad to find out about his death.
