Edward O. "Captain" Lenz, 81, of Kurten passed away Saturday, September 17 after a three month battle with brain cancer at his home surrounded by his devoted wife, children and grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 21 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan with Charlie Ray officiating. Interment will follow at Kurten Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Edward was born February 1, 1935 in Kurten the son of Rinhold and Tillie (Hahn) Lenz. He built and repaired powerlines for 44 years from Brownsville, Texas to Minnesota. Edward worked for various contractors from 1953-1973. He began working at the City of Bryan in 1973 until he retired in 1997. After only one month from his retirement, he was restless and bored and went back to work for Lloyd Joyce Agri Services for ten years. The things Edward enjoyed most was spending time with his family, taking care of his cattle, fishing the Brazos River and going to the casinos in Louisiana and Las Vegas. Edward was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church for 52 years. Edward is preceded in death by his parents; Rinhold and Tille Lenz; brothers, Jim Lenz and Walter Moore Lenz; sisters, Lucille Sheffield, Gladys Moody and Margie Weiman.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandra Warren Lenz of Kurten; son, Edward Lenz Jr. and wife Kim of Milano; daughters, Darla Rychlik and husband Randy, Kim Phillips and husband Kenny all of College Station; Courtney Lenz of Kurten, Melissa Tharp and husband Ken of Somerville; brother, Bobby Lenz of Bryan; sister, Vivian Hauk of Bryan; grandchildren, Megan and Josh Rychlik, Tyler, Hunter, Reagan and Duncan Phillips, Chris and Corey Barnes, Dustin and Nikki Herring, Taylor and Layne Tharp; great-grandchildren, Madison Hammond, Kayleigh, Sarah and Jenny Barnes, Kynlie Barnes and Kaylyn Kasberg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be, Josh Rychlik, Tyler Phillips, Cody Lenz, Chris Barnes, Corey Barnes, Dustin Herring and Kolby Von Gonten. Honorary pallbearers will be, Billy Warren, Ron Weiman, Duncan Phillips, Britton Siegert, Jay Dooley, Paul Hauk Jr. and Ty Klintworth.
