Edward E. Menges Jr.

I had Mr. Menges "Introduction to Fine Art" class at Florissant Valley Community College. Every time the class met, he would discuss a current event and ask the class if the event was an example of "life imitating art" or "art imitating life." He used this approach to teach us the art of critical thinking. Almost daily, I hear his words in my head when I go about my daily life. I am so grateful that he taught that class and shared his life experiences with us.

I never got to meet Mr. Menges but his work inspires me. A lifetime of Artistic creation. I hope to tell his story and share the art work I have found. His Legacy is still being written and I hope those who knew him best and his Art speak volumes for who he was deep inside.

Sorry about the loss of Ed. Although I attended University City High School I was not there when he was teaching. I did, however, meet him while I was attending Florissant Valley College. He was a very interesting man, who was always ready to cheer a person up with his humor.

My condolences, Jane. Ed and I go way back, as fellow UCHS students in the class of 1940 ,colleagues as teachers there, and friends for many years since then. Wallace Klein.

Memories of Mr. Menges are lifelong and wonderful: he made a large impact on my life as a UCHS student, memories still strong today. What a fine teacher, mentor and friend he was.

Guests at our residence in Los Angeles filled with many paintings and objects de art, always comment on two paintings I did under Ed Menges' tutelage. One is a portrait of Louis Armstrong and the other of Nat "King" Cole. I had done another of Johnny Ray but, it was stolen from an art exhibit at U City High that Ed had put together. Ed was a great mentor and a fine artist in his own right.

As a student of Ed Menges at University City High School, the classes were among my fondest memories. Mr. Menges always brought out the best in all of us. May his memory be a blessing to his family.

Ed Menges was one of my most memorable teachers at U. City High School. I took his class as a requisite - no artistic interest or talent - and left with a feeling of "I can do this," especially when he provided his paintbrush wisdom to spiff up my amateurish trials. He was patient and encouraging - and fun.
