Ed Vaughn played a very important role in the struggle for racial equality in the United States. He was a pillar of the black community in Detroit, Michigan, and in Alabama.. He was also a Pan-Africanist. He co-founded with his friend Arthur Smith (Kwame Atta) an organization which sponsored a number of African students to study in the United States.
