Swartz Funeral Home - Flint Obituary

YONAN, EDWARD S. – Of Davison, age 86, died Monday, July 22, 2024 at Beaumont Troy.

Edward Sargis Yonan, Sr. was born at home during the middle of a snowstorm in Flint, Michigan on April 9, 1938 to Mishael and Marguerite (Solomon) Yonan. He attended Flint schools and graduated from Flint Central High School in 1957. Post graduation he joined the United States Army, and was stationed in Texas and Tacoma, Washington. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Flint to embark on a 30+ year career with General Motors and the UAW, retiring in 1995. One of his proudest career accomplishments was the organization and implementation of child-care and elder care centers, demonstrating his unwavering support for all communities of UAW members, from children to retirees.

He was a faithful member of the Assyrian Church of the East—Mar Shimun Bar Sabbai Parish and held numerous positions on the Motwa from President to Treasurer. He spent many dedicated hours throughout his life volunteering at the church, the Assyrian American Club of Flint, and for the Assyrian Cemetery.

He loved his family immensely. He was a loyal and dedicated son, caring father, exceptional uncle, and a doting, attentive grandfather and great grandfather. He valued and believed in education almost as much as he loved Frank Sinatra and his Michigan Wolverines.

He is survived by his companion Donna, son Edward Jr., sister Annette, brother-in-law John; devoted nieces and nephew, Amy (Jim), Michele and Michael (Bryce); granddaughters Kyndra (Matt) and Kaylee (Adam); great-grandchildren Piper, Porter and Lyla, great-nephews Andrew and Matthew; and a community of special cousins who he remained close to.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mishael and Marguerite, special aunt Elsie Thomas and beloved sister Marian David.

His gentle nature and unwavering sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Visitation will take place on Friday, July 26, 2024 from 1 p.m.—8 p.m. at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road with a tribute service being held at 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday July 27, 2024 at the Assyrian Church of the East, 3112 Lewis Street, Flint with Reverend Benyamin Benyamin officiating. Graveside services will follow at the Assyrian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Assyrian Church of the East.

Ed was a good man, I remember him taking me and Eddie down to the armory when he played ball there. When they finished it was off to Luigis for Pizza.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Eddie and Annette.

We knew Ed from the Croatian Club. We will remember him fondly. Our condolences to his family.
