I had to be on the 5th floor at BVA last week for the first time in years. It made me miss Dr Z very much and his willingness to counsel me and the great laughs we had.

I am sorry to be hearing only now of the passing of Dr. Z. He was a great friend and mentor to me during his years at BVA. We bonded over our shared connection to Washington State and created a group of similarly connected folks for lunch outings. I loved to hear the latest adventures of his kids and grandkids, of whom he was very proud. He was a source of comfort at times of loss in my life and a source of laughter and inspiration on good days. I am thankful for the chance I had to know him.

Ed was a co resident with M C Whitman and myself at Naval Hospital Oakland. We had lots of laughs and drama in the face of adversity and stress. I have our graduation picture hanging in the office with the fond and sometimes poignant stories of our formative years it evokes. I wish he had more years to cash in the chips he worked so hard for and enjoy his expanded family. Ruth and I send prayers for Debbie and the family. CAPT Zech has stood his last watch, bravo zulu.

Dear Debbie and children of Ed. It is with deepest sorrow that I heard of Ed's passing via the Rotary letter this morning. He was a great friend and we enjoyed many good times while he lived with me as he finished his commitment to St Josephs Hospital prior to moving back to Bethesda to rejoin with you, his family. He will be missed and I know the huge hole he will leave in family and friend gatherings. Much love to all of you! John Templeton
