Davis Greenlawn Funeral Chapels and Cemeteries Obituary

On November 8, 2016, Edwin Joe (EJ) Kubena left this world to be with his Lord and the love of his life, Florence (Zeke) Kubena. EJ was the oldest son of Henry and Annie Kubena. He was born February 27, 1927. EJ served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Florence Oldag, after she proposed, and they had seven sons; Edwin, Jerry, James, Patrick, David, John and Joseph. Over the years his family has grown to include 7 daughters-in- law, 25 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He was a long standing member of the American Legion Post #226 and contributed to many of the building projects at the legion hall and called Bingo for over 30 years. Many people will remember him as a hard working cotton gin operator at the Kubena Gin Company or from his many years of service to East Bernard ISD, but all that knew him will remember the soft spoken gentle man that we all loved to call Grandpa EJ. He touched many people through his music and his light heartedness. He used his music to entertain in nursing homes and to praise by playing at Polka Masses at Holy Cross Catholic Church. He played accordion for many of the local Opry shows and even played on the Big Joe Polka Show. His favorite audience was playing for his family as they gathered around the kitchen table to play dominoes or playing the Chicken Dance just one more time for the grandkids. Anyone who knew him will truly miss him, but those who knew him best know that he is truly happy again waltzing with "his girl" to Zeke's Lovely Waltz. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with entombment to follow in Holy Cross Catholic Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5-8 P.M with a Rosary at 7:00 P.M.
