Matthes, Edwin August, Jr. age 78, of Mpls, passed away peacefully after a heroic 8-year battle with COPD. Survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Victoria (Marino) and seven children: Edwin III (Cheryl), Ralph (Karen), Lawrence (Ann), Daniel (Shelley), Anthony (Laurie), Randy (Maureen), Michelle Swanson (Todd); 18 grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Mary Marino; sisters, Barbara Parker, Julie Matthes; brother, Donald Matthes of Seattle, WA, and many relatives and friends. Papa Ed was a 32-year member of AA and a 22-year Marine, fought in Korea and spent a year in Nagasaki, Japan serving our country. After retiring from Camp Pendleton in 1970, he brought his family back to Vicki's hometown of NE Minneapolis. He bought and ran Marino's Restaurant, which remains in the family today. Visitation beginning 4 PM with prayer service 7 PM Monday at Billman-Hunt Chapel, 2701 Central Ave NE, Mpls. Mass of Christian Burial 10 AM Tuesday at St. Clement Catholic Church, 911 24th Ave NE. Burial at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, with a celebration of Ed's life following will be held at Fridley American Legion (Marino's) at 7365 Central Ave NE, Fridley.
