Elbert Nathaniel Gates

Professor Gates was very well liked amongst the secretarial staff at Cardozo School of Law. He came in to the office with a smile, spoke like a gentleman and endeared himself to all. I particulary enjoyed speaking with him, and sometimes came down to his office just to talk and catch up. There are few professors who treated the secretaries with such a personal and human touch, and few who will be missed as much as Elbert Gates.

Elbert was my beloved colleague at the law school. He brought to it not only his learning and wisdom but more importantly, his humanity and his soul. He left a void that cannot be filled.
