I knew Eleanor when we were studying at the Art Students League in New York. I was thrilled to meet someone from Baltimore where my mother grew up. Eleanor had known my cousin Gordon Whiting who had been her Sunday School teacher, which made me smie. Eleanor had a great sense of humor. I am so sadden to learn of Eleanor´s death. I´ve remembered her fondly many times since my retirement from the field of conservation, because I worked with her for over 20 years, after she hired me at the Smithsonian Institution. Eleanor was impressive for many reasons, but not the least for her unrelentingly cheerful and optimistic nature. I´ll never forget her gaiety and humor (which included telling riotous stories of hot-tub encounters at national conventions); she could always be...

I am so sorry and extend my sympathy to the family. Eleanor loved all things beautiful but did not turn from the fragile and in need of her attention. Eleanor generously shared her vitality, curiosity and spirit of fun with me and with so many. Her care for and kindness to animals was inspiring. I will miss her.
