Waterford - Eleanor (Cook) St. Martin, 91, formerly of Waterford, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013.
She was born Feb. 20, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Helen and Walter Cook. She attended parochial school and then Bayridge High School in Brooklyn, and then Rices Business College in Charleston, S.C. and later at Mitchell College in New London. She was active in sports and ran track at Ebbetts Field in New York and also skated with Roller Derby in New York. Being an avid artistic roller skater, she had won many trophies, medals and awards at competitions in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
She was married to Joseph St. Martin, who predeceased her in December 1994.
Her first job was a drill press operator in a factory during war time, making aircraft instrument parts and later had various secretarial positions. Mrs. St. Martin had formerly worked for Barry's Cleaners but was an especially well known waitress, having worked at the former 95 House in New London and at the Officers Club at the Sub Base where she was fondly known as "Ellie".
She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl St. Martin of Waterford and Nannette Enos and her husband, Rick, of New London; a son, Jean J. St. Martin and his wife, Andrea of Westerly; grandsons, Shawn St. Martin and John Lombardi III; granddaughters, Nicole Quito and Denise Lovelace; five great-grandchildren, Jacob and Riley Lovelace and Hayden, Paige and Kylie Lombardi; and her long time companion, John King of Waterford.
She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Cook; a sister, Florence Malley; and a great-grandson, Giovanni Quito.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, New London. Private burial will be in the Veterans Administration National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass. There are no calling hours.
Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc., 19 Ohio Ave., Norwich, CT 06360.

I remember meeting Ellie about 10 yrs. ago, when her & my Dad John stopped by to visit. Ellie enjoyed meeting my Grandson. She was a very nice lady & will be missed by all who knew & loved her.
