Elias Katsaros Obituary

Captain Elias Katsaros, a native of Lesvos Island, Greece, son of the late Anestis Katsaros and Vassiliki Katsaros of Piraeus, Greece, Founder and President of Maritime Endeavors Shipping Co. Ltd of Metairie, passed away on Sunday August 16th after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Afroditi Kalitsounaki Katsaros, his two sons, Marios Malikoutis of Houston and Emmanouil Malikoutis of Covington, his mother, Vassiliki Katsaros of Piraeus and his sister, Pelagia Katsaros of Piraeus, Greece. Captain Katsaros was a graduate of Hydra Maritime Academy of Greece and sailed as Oceangoing Captain for Phocean Ship Agency of London until 1982 when he became the Port Captain in charge of Chartering and Operations for Prometheus Maritime of Greece until 1988 when he settled in New Orleans as Assistant Vice President of General Steamship Agency in New Orleans. Captain Katsaros was a visionary in the Maritime Industry and his vision compelled him to open Maritime Endeavors as a means to serve the Hellenic Maritime community of Greece. In order to assist shipowners to navigate the complexity of U.S. regulations, he conducted a series of seminars in Greece which included U.S. Government and Port officials and continuously updated the shipowners of the changes. Captain Katsaros previously served as Vice Chairman, Technical Committee of Mariners of The Steamship Association of Louisiana. In 2002 Captain Katsaros was appointed as the Honorary Consul of the Government of Malta. Captain Katsaros was an avid fisherman and for many seasons Captain Katsaros also sponsored the SELASA Olympiakos Soccer Team. Visitation will be in the Chapel at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, on Saturday August 22, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service. Father George Wilson of Holy Trinity Cathedral will be officiating.

Being shocked by the unexpected and unbelievable departure for your last voyage, here we stand in the port of Mytilene (Lesvos, Greece), the place where you started your wanderings following your dreams, just to say the last goodbye to you Helias Katsaros, our beloved relative; a man with a kind soul, an excellent sailor both in life and at sea.

Hardly making out the steam from the smokestack drifting away until the Aegean horizon of our sorrow, memories of our few but meaningful common moments, come up. We are full of feelings of love, respect, pride, admiration and gratitude towards the son of an outspoken, industrious and honest father, a beautiful and elegant mother and the brother of a unique artist and writer, Pelagia, with a heart full of love and affection to all unprotected creatures.

Farewell, Helias, we are convinced that your voyage will be good, besides you are a captain!

It is difficult for me to express in English my feelings for Elias, such a kind person and such an excellent shipping professional at the same time. I had the privilege to know him well when I was hosted for a month at his home, 15 years ago and became a good friend of this real gentleman. The world, especially the shipping world, seems now poor to me without your presence dear Elias. Deep condolences from my wife Christina and me to Venaki and family wishing them to be strong and manage this painful change in their life.
