Not sure what to say?

Betsy and her mother were dear friends of my mother and I came to call Betsy and Donald close friends and adopted family of my own family. Betsy was a multi talented and giving person who brought light into the lives of all who knew her. After my parents passed Betsy was like a sister to me. Living 10,000 miles away she was my connection to home. Betsy was a southern lady : elegant, refined, outspoken and fair. May she rest in eternal peace with our dear ones.

To Betsy Buford, the first Empress of Oakwood! Loved and missed forever! Pamela Davison & Sibyl Haynes

I came to know Betsy through her husband Don Matthews, who was a colleague in the UNC History Department. She was a dynamic woman, deeply committed to the value of historical knowledge, the arts, and participation in public life. She was always friendly, lively, and thoughtful, and she contributed to the civic life of NC in so many ways. I send my deep sympathy to Don. Lloyd Kramer

Betsy was a true professional and devoted public servant. We met during my tenure as the Executive Assistant to the Secretary of State, Thad Eure, and her work with the NC Museum of History. She always had a bright smile and would light up the room. Her beautiful face and her eyes filled with excitement and creative ideas to serve the citizens of North Carolina. She will be greatly missed.

It was a privilege to know and work with Betsy. She was always a most effective advocate for advancing all the programs throughout DCR and for any other organization or cause she chose to be involved with. Her untimely passing is a loss for everyone who knew and worked with her. My deepest sympathies are extended to Donald and her other family members.

Betsy was the consummate southern lady. She always greeted me whenever I saw her at the various organizations we were involved in. It was a pleasure serving under her at DCR back in the day. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

I had the privilege of meeting and visiting with Betsy on a few occasions. I found her to be lots of fun, and was struck by her indomitable spirit, her lovely "southern" voice which was perfect for communicating her sense of humor, and most important, her kindness. An amazing life, one worthy of great celebration and good stories to be shared. My condolences to her family.

I knew Betsy for many years through my work with the North Carolina Museum of History. She loved North Carolina and she loved people. She was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by so many people. Betsy thanks for all your kindness and those beautiful smiles.
