Elizabeth L. Pruden, age 87, died on March 29, 2016 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Elizabeth was born in Fort Wayne on December 9, 1928 to Ray and Elsie (Bauer) Pruden. Education, medicine, reading and writing were the passions of her life. The 1946 Valedictorian of Concordia Lutheran High School went on to receive her Bachelor's degree from Franklin College in 1950, Master's degree from Wayne University in 1952 and PhD in Biochemistry from Indiana University in 1976. Elizabeth began her career at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne as Chief Medical Technologist (1952-1964), then became Technical Director at Caylor Nickel Research Foundation in Bluffton, Indiana (1964-1969). Elizabeth was named Medical Technologist of the Year in 1964 by the Indiana Society of Medical Technology. After earning her PhD, Elizabeth moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where she served as Clinical Chemist at Schumpert Medical Center (1976-1996). Elizabeth was also a Clinical Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University School of Medicine at Shreveport (1976-1984) and contributed to and edited many laboratory medicine and clinical chemistry journals and text books. After retiring in 1996, Elizabeth returned to Fort Wayne to be closer to family and friends. In her retirement, Elizabeth turned novelist, writing as Elizabeth Fritz, and publishing eleven light fiction novels from 2006 to 2013. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Ray Franklin and Elsie Elvera (Bauer) Pruden and is survived by her brother, Don Edward Pruden of Fort Wayne and many cherished nieces and nephews. Dear Family: We are deeply saddened to learn of "Betty's" passing. Please accept our condolences. Betty was a good friend and a good business associate. She was also an outstanding friend of Medical Technology. She will be missed by many.

I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to Dr. Pruden's family. I have loved this dear woman for over thirty years. I have never known a more gifted and talented person. I met her when I began my medical technology career at Schumpert Medical Center. She was my mentor for many years, beginning at the time I was promoted into a supervisory position as a young med tech. She provided such guidance and wisdom, and always in such a patient manner. We have communicated since she retired, with the last communication being a copy of "Hobo and Me". I have read and I treasure her novels. Please know that I feel as if I know most of her beloved nieces and nephews, as well as Don and her dear friend and sister Mary Lou. She spoke so fondly of each member of the family, and I am sure there is quite a reunion in heaven at this moment!

I worked with Dr. Pruden for over 15 years at Schumpert Medical Center and never found a more caring intelligent person so dedicated to her work and colleagues. She was so much help to me and all of our pathologists and kept us on the straight path. She had more knowledge that all of us. We missed her greatly when she retired and will now cherish her memory. My sincere condolences to the family, Steve Heard.

Many condolences to Dr. Pruden's family. Dr. Pruden was a very special person. I first met Dr. Pruden when I began my Medical Technology clinicals at Schumpert in July 1976. Dr. Pruden had just arrived at Schumpert Medical Center and was in charge of the clinical chemistry program. I feel that due to Dr. Pruden's guidance not only as a student, but over the next 20 years during my working years at Schumpert, she was the greatest influence over my technical career. I later moved on to the business realm in Pathology, but still consider Dr. Prudent to be the best mentor I ever had. I am truly saddened to hear of her passing. The profession has lost a pillar of medical laboratory science.
Best Regards,
Linda Price
