Dr. Simmons was my doctor at Kaiser during the mid-1980's. Having Dr. Simmons as a physician was like having a second mother. I'm an African-American woman, and I was diagnosed with asthma at age 15 months. With Dr. Simmons, I didn't have to explain asthma, atopic dermatitis, or anything else related to my asthma. She just knew! Dr. Simmons was also an indirect inspiration to me; I left the San Francisco Bay Area in 1986 to study public health at the University of Michigan.

She was my mother's doctor and a mentor to me in my pursuit of a career as a medical doctor. I would later learn she was a mentor to many other future physicians. She was a great woman, mentor,trailblazer and role model. She will be missed.
