Ellen Poplar

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Ellen S. Poplar, 82, a resident of Davenport, will be 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 22, 2010 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport. Visitation will be Thursday, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, where a prayer service will be offered at 4 p.m. Burial will take place in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Poplar died Monday, October 18, 2010 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Davenport. Ellen Spillane Courtney was born February 21, 1928, in Chicago a daughter of Richard and Elanor (Caldwell) Courtney. She was united in marriage to Edward W. Poplar, October 4, 1947 in Chicago. He preceded her in death, February 4th, 2005. Ellen had been employed as a paralegal for many years. Everyone will remember Ellen, or “Miss Elley� or especially “Gram� as she was known to her family and friends. Always a smile and a warm reception she treasured her family and friends and especially her late husband Ed. Together, they provided a loving home and a door that was never closed to their family assisting in any way. Ellen and Ed had enjoyed many family vacations when raising their family. In later years they had enjoyed many happy times on cruises and trips together. Ellen was an avid Cubs and Bears fan having grown up in Chicago, but had adopted the Hawkeyes after moving to Iowa. She loved golfing with the Does and would never miss lounge bingo at the Elks Club. She talked frequently this past year, about the friends at the Elks Club Memorials may be made to Q-C Alzheimers Association Survivors include her children and their spouses, a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Tom Cech, Burbank, Illinois; sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Dodie Poplar, Davenport, Donald and Milly Poplar, Chapel Hill, Tennessee; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
