ELWYN NICHOLSON Obituary

ELWYN J NICHOLSON, STATE SENATOR; GROCER Elwyn J. Nicholson, four term state senator for Jefferson Parish from 1972-1988, and President of Nicholson and Loup Food Giant, died of natural causes on Sunday, September 28, 2014, at the age of 90. Senator Nicholson is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rose Marie Nicholson and his sister, Carole N. Malbrough. He is also survived by his children, Sharon N. Lewis (Michael,) and John W. Nicholson III (Kathleen.) Survived also by grandchildren Matthew and Celeste Lewis, Anne, John IV, William Nicholson and Kristie N. Lapish. He leaves to cherish his memory five great-grandchildren. Pre-deceasing him was his brother, Dr. Farrell R. Nicholson and parents Eve and John Nicholson. A memorial service will be held at Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 5101 West Bank Expressway, Marrero, La., on Friday, October 17, 2014. Visitation will be from 8:00-10:00am, followed by a funeral Mass and interment in Metairie Cemetery. Family, friends, former employees of Nicholson & Loup and all those he helped are invited to attend. For information, please contact the funeral home at 504-341-9421.

My uncle, Bernard Goldman, MD, and my father, John Firestone, MD, considered Mr. Nicholson a great factor in the growth of Marrero and Westwego in the 70's and 80's. They especially appreciated his service to West Jefferson Hospital. They considered his brother, Dr. Farrell Nicholson, a great asset to the medical community for his many years of practice. In fact, I had the good fortune to study under Dr. Farrell as a medical student, an experience I treasure. Both were very fine men and will be fondly remembered. may God comfort all of us.

Mr. Elwyn's memorial was everything he would have wanted. His loving wife and family, greeting all of the caring friends and family, who came to pay their respect. At the age of 15, Mr Elwyn hired me and many of my school friends to begin our careers in the working industry. My mother, brother and sister all worked for him also. I have some wonderful fond memories of Nicholson and Loup. May our Lord place his loving hands on Mr. Elwyn and guide him to his peaceful home with all his family and friends. May he wrap his loving arms around his family here and let them feel his love and comfort in knowing that he is in our Loving God's care. May he Rest In Peace.
