Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home - Wethersfield Obituary

Emily Loring Hall Phillips, of Bloomfield, Connecticut, died on April 19, 2016 at the age of 82. She is survived by her children Margaret Louise Phillips (Jonathan Johnsen, Sam and Lilly), Richard Hazard Phillips Jr. (Paula), and Sarah Loring Butkus (Glenn, Tyler, Aaron and Kathryn). She is also survived by her siblings, Barbara Hall Gibbs, Bloomfield, Connecticut, Robert Hall (Marcia), West Hartford, Connecticut, and Richard Hall, West Hartford, Connecticut. Emily Phillips was born in Hartford, Connecticut on March 12, 1934 to Margaret Loring Hall and Llewellyn Hall. Emily graduated from the Oxford School in West Hartford in 1952, and from Oberlin College in 1956. She married Richard Hazard Phillips on July 28, 1962, in West Hartford, Connecticut. Subsequently, they moved to Newburgh, New York, returning to the Hartford area in 2007. In Newburgh, Emily worked as a substitute teacher in the area school systems until she went back to school at SUNY New Paltz for her Master's Degree in Special Education. She then worked as a teacher for the developmentally disabled at the New York State facility, Letchworth Village, in Rhinebeck, and she remained in the New York State system until retirement. Before going back to full time work she co-founded the Operetta Workshop, a community theater group which performed child-friendly musicals at grammar schools throughout the Hudson region. Both she and her late husband, Richard Phillips, were active in the Calvary Presbyterian Church, where she started and directed the handbell choir. An avid traveler, after retiring she traveled to Turkey, Kenya, Vietnam, Norway, France, Peru, and the Southwest. The memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30th, at 11 a.m., at Seabury Chapel, 200 Seabury Drive, Bloomfield, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association and Masonicare Hospice are appreciated. To share a memory with the family, please visit www.dillonbaxter.com.
