VANHORN, MRS. EMMA A. Grand Rapids (Formerly of Ludington) Emma Alice Shafer VanHorn, age 91, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Ludington, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014, at Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids. She was born October 8, 1922, in Summit Township, the daughter of William and Rose (Stafford) Shafer. She was married to Frederick Bender VanHorn, who preceded her in death in 1961, and later married Clem Gerhard, who also preceded her in death. Earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Mrs. VanHorn was a teacher in the Ludington Public Schools for 33 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of AAUW and Ludington United Methodist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by sisters, Mary (Jerry) Bennett, Blanche (John) McCumber and Phyllis (Richard) Peterson; brothers, Harvey Shafer, Larry Shafer and Clarence Shafer, and a grandson, Benjamin Teverbaugh. The family thanks Clark Home for their excellent care of their mother the last 14 years. FAMILY: She is survived by her children, Kathryn Teverbaugh of Newaygo, William (Sara) VanHorn of Sparta and Dave (Judy) VanHorn of SC; grandchildren, Allison (Dennis) Scheuneman, Lisa (Hank) Montgomery, Jonathan (Rachel) VanHorn and Nathanael (Elizabeth) VanHorn; great-grandchildren, Madison Scheuneman, Ethan, Nolan, Sophia and Hudson Montgomery, Nora, Ellery and Clara VanHorn, Samari VanHorn and Logan VanHorn, with one more expected any day; surviving brothers, Tom Shafer of Scottville and Art Shafer of Ludington. SERVICE: Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 1 PM, at Ludington United Methodist Church, 5810 W Bryant Rd., Ludington, with the Rev. Dennis B. Bromley officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Summit Township Cemetery, Mason County. VISITING TIME: Friday, March 28, from 6-8 PM, at CLOCK Funeral Home of Ludington, 309 S Washington Ave., Ludington.
