Chief Warrant Officer Eric A. Smith had wanted to fly since he was a little boy, but by the time he graduated from the Rochester (N.Y.)Institute of Technology he figured his grades would keep him grounded. In the mid-1980s, some Air Force pilots he met gave him new hope, said his mother, Lillian Lake, 70. "They told him he would be better off going into the Army and being a helicopter pilot, even though it's more difficult to fly a helicopter than a plane," she said. Smith, 42, a 16-year Army veteran, was killed April 2 when the helicopter he was in went down. "He told me if anything happened to him, I should remember it was his choice," Lake said. "He said if he's going to die, he wants to die flying a helicopter." The youngest of three brothers, Smith never married. "He was always hoping to find a girl to marry," his mother said. "But because he moved around so much, if he met somebody he felt it wouldn't be fair to pick her up from her roots unless it was the right type of girl that could adjust."

To Eric, his family and friends:
I was saddened when I recently learned of Eric's passing. I went to flight school with Eric in 1988. I got to know Eric after a meet and greet, when the WOC's (students) stood up and told a little about themselves, where there from, how they ended up in flight school, etc... in front of the TAC's (instructors) and other WOC's. After my speech, Eric approached me with that big smile kind of laughing and told me I was funny. He said if this pilot thing...

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Chief Warrant Officer Smith. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that CWO Smith knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something...
