Eric was born in Detroit MI. Raised as an only child in a tumultuous household, he found comforting structure in the Catholic Church when he was twelve. He attended Catholic seminary, then at 16 he entered a Trappist Monastery, Gethsemani Abbey, in Kentucky. His vow of silence ended in 1953,...

I never met Eric, but as an artist, when seeing Eric's artwork at the CAP Auction, there was an immediate attraction, I just had to have some of his work. I bought 7 pieces and got to tour his house. The bamboo reminded me of home. An incredible life he lived, my only regret, I wish I could have met him when he was still here!

I met Eric and Eugene during several of their visits to Kentucky. My memories are of Eric's vibrant personality and loving supportive nature. I still have a Buddha pendant he gave me and regret not taking the opportunity to speak with him last fall. I will truly miss him.

We met Eric and Eugene at LAC and were inspired for decades by their joie de vivre, wit, wry intelligence, love for each other and the world. They truly re-defined the words " gentle men".

This project took on a life of its own, and I soon realized the education we needed to pass on could not be crammed onto both sides of one piece of paper. Eric graciously...

My condolences. Eric and Eugene were wonderful neighbors to have. My parents Jim and Jenny Hibbard were contemporaries and friends but I only knew them for their magical garden and house, made with inventive beauty and sensitivity, always something that nurtures me as I passed their bamboo grove. And of course I remember the parrot!

Condolences to the family of Eric and Eugene. Eric and Eugene were our neighbors in Willamette Heights. Every time I´d climb the stairs from Thurman to Aspen I´d pass their secret garden entrance. Occasionally I´d see either Eric or Eugene and chat as neighbors do. Sometimes I´d see them drive off in their little sporty orange car. From what I understand, Eric and Eugene´s late in life marriage was followed by the first successful challenge to Social Security to secure surviver benefits...

Eric and Eugene were an inspiration to me growing up two blocks away. I remember visiting their house once and was so impressed by their creativity and warmth, and the beauty of their home and garden which truly felt like a sanctuary.
