While on a working assignment in Australia, Eric was a member of the Geelong Gliding Club. Eric was a dedicated glider pilot, he made quick progress attending club camps and cross-country coaching events, on the 2nd of January 2015, Eric flew a task of 545km from Tocumwal, which earned him a rarely achieved David Hooper Memorial Trophy for the longest flight made by a Victorian Soaring Association pilot within two years of going solo
