Erna R. Wiedner
October 13, 1924 - January 7, 2023
Erna passed away peacefully after a short illness on January 7th, surrounded by her adoring family. She was 98 years old.
Erna was born in Petersdorf Austria, the 4th of 6 daughters. She attended a convent school and was the star of many plays. At 14 she met her future husband Karl, who was playing the accordion for one of their productions. After she finished school, Erna worked as a bookkeeper for a local apple juice company, where her boss would introduce her as "the one who knows everything". Erna and Karl were married in 1953 and immigrated to Edmonton, Canada in 1955. In search of a warmer climate, they moved to San Francisco in 1957, settling in the Sunset district. Erna took her 2 young daughters to a playground in Golden Gate Park every day and practiced her English with everyone she met there. After falling in love with sunny Marin, they bought their first house in San Rafael and moved on to San Anselmo as their family grew. Karl was transfer to Ann Arbor Michigan in 1972, where they spent a decade. Erna never stopped rooting for the Wolverines. Upon returning to California, they settled in Novato.
Known as Omi by all who loved her, Erna was a dedicated mom and grandmother. Always there for both generations. She was an excellent cook, committed to providing the healthiest food for her family. She was an avid gardener who loved her flowers and produced legendary tomatoes. She continued to work in the garden and walk in her neighborhood daily until the very end of her life. She loved being outdoors and seeing the blue sky. She was an outstanding bridge player and was always dressed perfectly for any occasion. She loved classical music, making evergreen Christmas decorations and reading the SF Chronical daily.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Karl of 68 years, who passed away last February. She is survived by daughters Karin, Rikki, Barbara and Robin, grandchildren Erin Wiedner, Briga Mullin and Izzy Mullin, sons-in-law Patrick Mullin and Andy Stich, soon to be grandson-in-law Matt Vaughn, caregiver Rinchen Lhamo and many grand-dogs. She will be dearly missed by all. A memorial mass will be held at St Anthony's Catholic Church in Novato on Friday, January 27th at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Catholic Charities.
