Ernest “Red” Allgood, 83, of Oskaloosa passed away Friday, November 4, 2016, at MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
Ernest Lee Allgood, son of Cecil E. and Pansy Mary (Smith) Allgood, was born October 12, 1933, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was a 1952 graduate of Oskaloosa High School where he enjoyed participating in track and football. While in high school he worked for H.G. Brown Plumbing, Heating, and Mechanical contractors. Soon after graduation, he enlisted in the Navy. He served for twelve years, from 1952 to 1964. During those years he was assigned to several ships including the USS Missouri, USS Walker, USS Bryce Canyon, USS Northampton and the USS Everal. While in the Navy he served in the boiler room, furthering his knowledge of in heating, plumbing, and mechanical areas. When Ernie could, he traveled home to Oskaloosa on the week-ends; it was during these excursions that he met and fell in love with his future wife, Billie Gwen Hurst. They were married, March 1, 1965, at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, where they made their home.
Ernie resumed his career with H.G. Brown after his return from the Navy and worked for them until 1978. At that time he was hired as a superintendent for L.A. Fulton and Sons Plumbing and Heating Contractors out of Urbandale, Iowa. Ernie traveled around the state to hospitals, schools and other institutions supervising repairs and new construction. He was well thought of by his employers and his co-workers, he knew his trade well and always gave his all to his work. He retired in 1998. Always an early riser, Ernie continued this habit with his friends at his 5 a.m. coffee group at McDonalds. Ernie attended the Faith Community Church in Eddyville. He loved visiting with and learning about people, no matter what their age; he made friends wherever he went and will truly be missed by many.
His family includes his wife of 51 years, Billie of Oskaloosa; his son and daughter-in-law, Ernie Jr. and Mishelle Allgood of Oskaloosa; his daughters: Debbie Allgood of Nephi, Utah and Mary Wanders of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren: Samantha (Adam) DeBruin, Shelby Allgood, Seth and Keegan McCallum and Alex and Madison Wanders, all of Oskaloosa; one great-granddaughter, Peyton; a sister, Mary Lou Fielder of Oskaloosa; and sister-in-law, Cleo Allgood of Jefferson City, Missouri.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Newell; a brother, Cecil “Dale” Allgood; and a brother-in-law, Richard Fielder.

Military honors will be presented by the Oskaloosa Honor Guard. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation will begin at 11 .am. Red was a VERY talented mechanical supervisor, he could figure out anything and teach you by just being around him. He would often say , "now listen", this is what's wrong or this is what needs to be done. Thinking of you Billie, Ernie Jr. and family !

Dear Billie and family...I don't have the words to express how I felt when I learned of Ernie's passing. I always enjoyed visiting with you guys and appreciated you in every way. Steve regarded Ernie with the utmost respect, not only as a skilled contractor but as a very good and dear friend. I am so sorry for your loss but at the same time rejoice as God has welcomed another one of His children home.
