I remember the first time I met Ernie (Dr. Hodge). He was one of our CellCept investigators.. As he thought about joining industry, a few of us took him to dinner at Charlie Trotter's in Chicago..
Well, Ernie did join the Roche Transplant team as one of our medical science liaisons.... and was such a wonderful driving force... teacher, friend, high contributor, a great clinical scientist... passionate about CellCept/transplantation and all it could be... Another great memory...

Having read the articles and Guest Book entries regarding Ernie, it is heart warming to know so many people knew him through the years as I knew him 30+ years ago as college roommates. Ernie and I were suitemates at Stag Co-Op our first semester at Texas in the fall of 1970 and then roommates for the next three semesters. I believe we all knew Ernie was destined for greatness, given his academic brilliance and dedication. But there was more to Ernie than books and studing, he had a zest for...

Sen. Jane Nelson presents Transplant Day Resolution to Dr. Hodge, while members of the Texas Transplant Society look on.
To Betsy and all the family,
My thoughts and prayers still go out to you as you cope with losing Ernie. I will always appreciate him, not only for his energy and passion for transplant patients and causes...and for life in general, but for his encouragement, warmth, and humor. I learned so much from Dr. Hodge, and now, who will I call when I don't know the answer to something transplant-related? It seemed he knew everything, and if he didn't, he had someone's phone number committed to...

Ernie made a huge impression on me 30 years ago as his suite mate in the Stag house on campus. I truly regret that I haven't been in contact with him for so long- from the comments and news stories- my great loss. Nevertheless, I want to add my rememberances of a man who it was apparent, even then, would make a huge contribution to so many other lives. Ernie had that mischievious grin and laugh- you knew that there was some danger lurking when you saw it. He was the UT champion kolache eater,...

My memories of Ernie are more than 30 years old but they're still fresh and bring me much joy. I'll remember Ernie for his energy, his humor, and his ever-present smile. I am so proud about his accomplishments as a dedicated and pioneering physician. I wish Betsy, his mom, and the rest of his family and friends comfort in their time of loss.

Ernest Hodge was among the most intriguing people I'd ever worked with, or for that matter, met. Yes he could be a bit impatient--intensity was his nature. He put it to wonderful use by channeling his tremendous energy into a career that meant better lives for others. As a man with a mission, he had little time to waste.
And yet there was the paradox of Ernie...his great heart and the little signals that he saw more in those around him than they might have guessed. He let...

Ernie (dad)
I was adopted by Ernie when I was 2 years old. He and Betsy were wonderful people to me although as I got older we didn't stay intouch as much as we should have.
I love him with all my heart and I'll always remember the great times we had.
It makes me smile when I think of how proud he was to watch me bike race or to play football as a chid.
I will always have a him in my heart and will never forget his smile.

Ernie was one of a kind -- passionate, brilliant, driven. He could be abrupt and occasionally abrasive, but underneath it he was a teddy bear with a great heart. For me he was always the person I first turned to to discuss ideas and strategy and I will dearly miss him. My sincere condolences to friends and family.
