Illa Day Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2017.
Louise Day was born in Bainbridge, Georgia in 1918, the youngest of two siblings. Her parents owned a small grocery store in Colquitt, GA and Louise loved to tell stories about the days when the family ate what was not sold. In her late elementary school years the family moved to Tallahassee and except for a couple years in Greenville, FL, Tallahassee was her home. She attended Leon High School when it was located where the Leroy Public Library now stands. A new school was needed to accommodate the growing student population and the present Leon HS came about. Upon time for Louise's class to graduate the new building was ready for occupancy hence her class was allowed to celebrate their graduation in the new auditorium. She was very proud of this achievement of being the first class to graduate from such a magnificent building.

She was happily married to Isaac Lowell Day and had a son, Melvin S. Day. Both preceded her in death. She maintained a loving relationship with her daughter-in-law Mrs. Irene A. Day of California.

Upon the death of her husband, having spent her married life as a home maker, she was determined to become self-sufficient and in her 40's she went back to school and obtained an LPN diploma. She then worked caring for homebound patients as a Home Health Nurse until her retirement.

Fishing, cooking, and painting were her hobbies but above all she was an avid reader with God's Word being her favorite book. She lived at Georgia Bell D. Apartments (now Westminster Gardens) for over 3 decades. When she spoke of HOME, she meant Georgia Bell where she remained living independently until her 97th birthday. Almost 20 of those years she volunteered to deliver 'Meals on Wheels' to those residents that were unable to make it to the dining room, for this service she received a letter of commendation from the president.

She never lost her sense of humor, two of her favorite responses when asked "How are you?" Were "Much better now that I saw you" and "I think I am sober but I won't swear to it" (she never drank a drop of liquor in her life!)

She was along time member of Piedmont Park Alliance Church and considered its members as family.
