I belatedly (very belatedly) learned of Ernest´s passing. He was a wonderful, optimistic, generous man who gave me great advice when I was starting out at Human Rights Watch. I remain struck by his decision to offer his talents and services to HRW after retiring. You see a way to help and you give. When I left for new opportunities, Ernest offered me advice, a good bye lunch, and good wishes. It meant the world. I don´t know if he knew how much it meant.

What a special person Ernest was. I knew him as the lifetime friend of my close friend Gerry Weiler. (Gerry had been the longtime partner of my sister Sally). Gerry and Ernest were boyhood friends in Germany and remained close after their families fled Nazi Germany and moved to NYC. Of all the people Gerry had loved in his life, Ernest was dearest to him; as only friends with such long shared experiences can be. I met Ernest several times and was taken by his warmth and gentle manner as...

It is Inspiring that human beings such as Ernest Ulrich grace this world. May comfort be bestowed upon his family and friends. Thank you, Mr. Ernest Ulrich for all the goodness you created. You are surely a credit to the human race.

I always admired Ernest's optimism and friendliness. He was a wonderful and inspiring colleague. I won't forget him. I wish his wife, children, family and friends courage and strength.
