Dennis Funeral Home - New Orleans Obituary

Deacon Ervin Reid was born to the late Moses and Sadie McKnight Reid on July 14, 1937, in Liberty Mississippi. He began his career as a trucker at an early age and enjoyed that passion for traveling the open road well into his middle age years, and until he decided that he would prefer working closer to home. After doing other local driving jobs, he began working as a heavy machine operator where he would continue until his retirement.

Ervin was educated in the Amite County School System in Mississippi at Central High School (formerly Liberty Rosenwald) where he received his diploma. After graduating, apart from working with his family on the farm he desired to become a long-haul truck driver. After marrying his late wife, Edna Weathersby Reid, he moved his family to Metairie, Louisiana where he continued work as a truck driver and where he would establish his domicile. Ervin was a generous person who was known to always help others in any way he could. He hosted a few of his siblings at his house who also wanted to transition to Louisiana. This he did without a second thought. The love he felt for his family, his fellow church members, and his friends will live on with memories and stories to carry for years to come.

Ervin accepted and dedicated his life to the Lord and was baptized as a young adult at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Amite County in Mississippi; later continuing his fellowship under the under the powerful leadership of Reverend E. E. Tutt of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Tutt's teachings were instrumental in the path to his soul's salvation. Ervin later became a permanent member of Rising Star Baptist Church where he was served as a member of the Church Beautifying Ministry, the church Male Chorus and ultimately installed as a church deacon, becoming a member of the Deacon Board.

Ervin remained faithful in prayer and to the Lord, while fulfilling his duties in the church until his failing health prevented him from attending service. However, his heart was always there. His devotion and dedication brought him through those difficult days along with his determination to be a part of Sunday Service, Prayer Service and Bible Studies until he could no longer attend. Ervin loved the Lord with his heart and soul and went to meet his maker in peace knowing this truth.

Deacon Reid was preceded in death by his parents Moses and Sadie McKnight Reid; his devoted wife, Edna Weathersby Reid; his four brothers, Prince, Harry, Moses (Otis), and Thomas (Bobby) Reid; his sisters-in-law, Rose and Thelma Reid; and his brothers-in-law Johnny Smith, Willie Allen, and Charles Bowman.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children, Janice R. Sayas, Mack Sr. (Darcel), Pamela (John) Pitts and Ervin Tyree (Monique) Reid, Derrick (Keyna), and Renee & Djuan Reid; his grandchildren, Melissa, Janae, Melody, Mack Jr. Sydney, Ervin III, Erica, Ervisha, Felvelca, Tahj (affectionately known as Bubba), Derrion, Darnell, Madison and Makiron; his brothers Samuel (Doris) and Curtiss (Deborah) Reid; his sisters Josephine Smith, Della Allen, and Penny Bowman; and his godchild, Laroy Cage. He also leaves his great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Homegoing Celebration will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Rising Star Baptist Church, 1357 Laurel Street, Metairie, Louisiana, 70003. Pastor David Jenkins officiating. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:00 am with a service following at 10 am. Interment: McKnight Cemetery, Liberty, Ms. Arrangements entrusted to Dennis Funeral Home.
