Esther R. (Matthiesen-Wind) Lyman

Bedford – Esther Rygaard (Matthiesen-Wind) Lyman, 78, of Bedford, NH, died January 3, 2011, at Elliot Hospital, after a period of declining health.

Born in Aalborg, Denmark on October 10, 1932, she was the daughter of Elvina Agathe (Norgaard) Wind and Hans Rygaard Matthiesen. She immigrated to the United States in 1955. Afterwards, she resided in Londonderry, NH for forty- years before moving to Bedford.

During World War II, she lived through the Nazi occupation of her country.

An outstanding student, she earned an associate degree in Computer Science from Hesser College as well as a bachelor of science degree in Management Information Systems, cum laude, from New Hampshire College.

In her early years, she was an interpreter for an import company. Later, she had various positions in information technology at Digital Corporation for several years. Most recently, she was the membership administrator for the US Masters Swimming Club.

She had a keen interest in computer programming, Girl Scouts, and the New England Masters Swimming Club. She was a talented seamstress, an avid gardener, and a creative writer. She also enjoyed sailing and knitting.

She was married fifty-four years to John (“Jack”) J. Lyman. He died March 26, 2009.

In her life:
Family members include her son, Willard John Lyman, of Londonderry, NH, two daughters, Laura Joyce Lyman, of Barrington, NH, Paula Denise Boire and her husband, Michael of Manchester, NH; her grandchildren, M. Matthew Boire, Nicholas Boire, Christian Boire, Tove-Ann Boire, and Anja Boire, all of Manchester, NH; her sister, Edith (Wind) Andersen of Hvidore, Denmark; her brother, Henning Norgaard Wind and his wife, Tove of Faaborg, Denmark; her nephew, Michael “Kim” Andersen, and his wife, Elena; and a grandniece, Anita of Solrod, Denmark. She was predeceased by her niece, Ann-Marie Norgaard Wind, in 1987.

SERVICES: A calling hour will be held Thursday from 9 - 10:15 AM at the Connor -Healy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 537 Union Street, corner of Concord Street, Manchester, NH.

A memorial service will follow at 10:15AM in the funeral home.

Urn burial will take place in the State of New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Girl Scouts of America, Green and White Mountains Council, 1 Commerce Drive, Bedford, NH 03110 or to the Boy Scouts of America, Daniel Webster Council, 571Holt Ave., Manchester, NH 03109.

Esther was such an interesting person who was very in tune to current events wether political, religious, or technical. The few times we were around her I always learned something from our conversations. She will be missed.
