Ethel Park Broome
WILMINGTON -- Mrs. Broome, 98, died March 21, 2006 in Wilmington, NC. For may years she lived in Winston-Salem and spent summers at White Lake, NC. Born January 29, 1908, the daughter of Isaac A. Park and Laura Stone Park, in Dobson, NC Ethel married Hoyle Sidney Broome, Sr. after attending what is now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Ethel and her late husband Hoyle, a graduate of Duke University, devoted their lives to learning and teaching in schools throughout North Carolina. For forty-four years Mrs. Broome taught in schools in Union, Surry, Forsyth and Sampson Counties. She was an elementary school principal in Sampson County where she also taught adult education courses. After earning certification in Library Science from East Carolina University, Ethel became library supervisor for the Surry County School System.
Mrs. Broome was a member of the honorary society for educators, Delta Kappa Gamma. Many of Mrs. Broome's former students maintained contact with her throughout their adult lives.
Though the granddaughter of a Baptist minister, Ethel became a member of the Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School classes and served in various capacities in the Church wherever she lived. An accomplished artist who preferred painting in oils, Ethel traveled widely during her retirement years, often accompanied by one of her five grandchildren. Involved in charitable and volunteer organizations throughout her life, her downtime was spent entertaining friends and family at her summer cottage at White Lake.
Ethel Broom was predeceased by her husband, Hoyle Sidney Broome, Sr.; one sister Nina Park Booker of Greensboro; and two brothers, Arthur I. Park of Oxford, and Roy H. Park of Ithaca, NY; her son-in-law, Frank Cleveland Miller of Charlotte.
She is survived by one son, Hoyle Sidney Broome, Jr. of Wilmington, NC and Birmingham, Alabama and his wife Ellen; and one daughter Wilma Broome Miller of Charlotte. Her five grandchildren are Ashley Broome Taylor and her husband John of Fresno, CA; Bailie Park Broome of Chapel Hill, NC, Jeff Miller and his wife Jenny of LaGrange, GA; Greg Miller and his wife Margaret, of Apex, NC and Laura Miller of Atlanta, GA. Her great-grandchildren, Michael and Christopher Miller, live in Apex, NC. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Dorothy Dent Park of Ithaca, NY and may nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ethel Broome will be held at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe, NC with the Reverend Joe Hamby of Myers Park Methodist Church officiating. The family will greet friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM preceding the service. Burial will be in Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials by made to Myers Park Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC, or to the charity of choice.
