Rest in peace Mr. Bates. You were one of my mentors in jr. high. Treated all Hispanics with respect. We all loved you. You will be missed!

Gene and my brother Ron were good friends and they played all sports together. Gene always found time to say hello and talk to me whenever we met. I will always remember Gene and what a great person he was.

My message to the Bates family so sorry for your loss . What I remember most about Gene , when we were kids playing sports agianst Ontario you always knew who was rooting for you . Gene always made a point to come talk to my brother or I and tell us there´s 5 bucks riding on you to win don´t let me down . I always smiled and said yes sir and of course we would win a wrestling match or a football game . Sometimes he´d tell us story´s about his days and I remember thinking I wish I could be...

So sorry to hear of the passing of a dear life long friend. Gene's little sister, Connie Ann, and I were best friens in High School at Vale union High School after until she was tragically killed in a car wreck early in her young life. Have so many great memories of Gene telling us what to do, driving his beautiful new chev.Imp ala convertible around the Bates Motel in Vale( because we were only 14 and couldn't drive on road ) of he and Irene taking Connie and I to our first Basque dance! ...

As a true legacy of the Ontario community, Gene will be missed. He was always a person students looked up and listened to as a teacher, school administrator and coach. Our prayers are with the Bates family.
