Eugene Giles

He was one of my favorite professors at Harvard, and I always enjoyed seeing him at the annual meetings of the American Association of Physical (now Biological) Anthropologists. I was really happy when he received the Charles R. Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Everybody was happy about that, as he was not merely a brilliant scholar, but a genuinely well-loved human. He always made the room a bit brighter! First memory of Gene: Calling my father's gas station (where I was working) to offer me a graduate fellowship ... starting in a summer term which began the previous week!

Dr. Giles was my professor at the University of Illinois, and meeting him was like meeting a celebrity for me - I had know about his work before graduate school and was so excited to take his class. He was one of the most intelligent and kind people I knew, and he was also on my PhD committee. I loved seeing him at conferences and will miss him greatly.
