GATE CITY, VA – Eugene M. McConnell, Jr. - age 85
Eugene M. McConnell, Jr., 85 of Gate City, VA passed away after a period of declining health on Thursday, March 27, 2025 at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was the son of the late Eugene Malcolm McConnell, Sr. and Nell D. McConnell and was a lifelong resident of Scott County, VA. Eugene was a member of the first graduating class of Gate City High School in 1956 and later graduated from Milligan College with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in 1963. He went to work for the Holston Defense Corporation in 1965 and retired following a 34 year career. Eugene was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and shooting. He was a hunter safety course instructor for TWRA for 50 years and a member of the Wilderness Road Rod and Gun Club. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Other than his parents, Eugene is preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Eva Blessing McConnell and a sister, Faye Templeton.
He is survived by his son, Eugene M. "Marty" McConnell, III (Miranda); granddaughters, his pride and joy, Caitlyn McConnell and Caylee McConnell; and sister, Brenda Price (M.C. "Brownie").
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April, 1, 2025 at Colonial Funeral Home from 11:00 AM – 12:00 Noon and other times at the son's residence. Graveside service will be at Oak Hill Memorial Park immediately following the visitation. Pastor Jeremy Ketron will be officiating. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
John de Leon, Tim France, Roger Baker, Dale Bellamy, Brian McPherson and Eric McPherson will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be J.B. Hensley and M.C. "Brownie" Price.
In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
