Eugene Meyer Obituary

Dr. Eugene F. Meyer

Born: May 6, 1938

Died: January 16, 2017

Dr. Eugene F. Meyer, 78, of Las Vegas, passed away Jan 16, 2017.

He was born May 6, 1938, in Michigan City, Indiana, and was a fifteen-year resident of Nevada. Eugene graduated from Lewis College of Science and Technology receiving his BS degree with honor on June 5, 1960. He went on to successfully obtain his Ph.D. from Florida State University and became a Professor of Chemistry.

Gene worked for the EPA for a short time and subsequently started his own very successful environmental consulting company whereby his brilliant testimony for the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Federal environmental cases, made him one of their most highly sought after expert witnesses - having never lost a case for them.

He is also the celebrated author of "Chemistry of Hazardous Materials," which is a comprehensive textbook for firefighters - with his Sixth Edition currently in circulation and his seventh edition pending future publication.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister; and beloved wife, Phyllis, who was his one and only true love and companion in life.

Gene and his wife shared a love of traveling and cruised the globe in pursuit of endless new experiences and adventures.

Gene is survived by his brother, Robert; his children, Holly, Lorna and David; and grandchildren, John, Ellen, Ryan and Lauren; and great grandchildren, Aurora and Noah; along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The family requests any gifts, memorials or donations be made to the Foundation for First Responders and Firefighters, PO Box 250900, Milwaukee, WI 53225-6516.

Family and friends will celebrate his life in a private gathering on Saturday, Jan 21, 2017.

Dad will be deeply missed by all those who loved him and he will remain in our hearts always and forever.

Dr Meyer.. or as you corrected me Gene... I will never forget your chemistry class at Lewis. But, even more touching was our meeting with Lorna in Las Vegas as I was there on a medical seminar. Your warmth, kindness, and gentle personality touched me deeply. I have your Text, which you autographed, which I proudly post on my bookshelf. What I learned from you, got me through medical school and my surgical training. I will never forget you. Thank you for being a part of my life.

Gene was my Chemistry teacher at Lewis U in the mid-70s and one of the reasons I went on to pursue my Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. He was so dedicated to teaching and always provided individual help when needed. My thoughts are prayers are with his family.

Gene Meyer changed lives. In my case, he took a student with little direction and no academic motivation and produce someone interested in science. There is no way, except for his direction, that I ever would have moved to Tallahassee for graduate school or ever had a career as a research scientist at the University of California, San Diego.
Thank You Gene, RIP,
Richard Bagnell
