Eugene J. "Gene" Steffen, 75, of 306 4th Ave NE, Farley, Iowa died Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 1:25 a.m. at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa from complications of a recent stroke.
Friends and relatives of Gene may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Farley, Iowa, where the prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. and the Farley American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 6:30 p.m.
Services for Gene will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Farley, Iowa with Rev. John Haugen presiding. Burial will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Farley, Iowa.
Gene was born October 14, 1937 in Luxemburg, Iowa, son of Aloysius and Mary (Maiers) Steffen. He received his education at the Holy Trinity Schools in Luxemburg, IA.
He was united in marriage to Catherine A. "Kay" Kramer on November 3, 1962 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in New Vienna, Iowa. Gene worked in construction for 16 years. He then was in business for 24 years as a petroleum distributor and convenience store owner, until his retirement in 2001.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Farley, Iowa. He was an avid Green Bay Packer, Chicago Cubs and Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed bowling, golf and playing cards with friends.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine "Kay" Steffen of Farley, IA; three children, Cindy (Dave) Thul of Marion, IA, Lisa (Dan) Autey of Grafton, WI, and Steve Steffen of Bettendorf, IA; five grandchildren, Bryan, Michael and Katie Thul, Tanner and Jaden Autey; two sisters Rita Willenbring of Farley, IA and Kay Naber of Winthrop, IA; and a brother-in-law, Harold "Moose" Maiers of Earlville, IA; brother and sister-in-laws, Ken (Jean) Kramer of Dubuque, IA, Ron (Renee) Kramer of Iowa City, IA, Mary (Tim) Pins of Dyersville, IA and several nieces and nephews; and his companion, his dog, Jake.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his father & mother-in-law, Cletus "John" & Lorraine Kramer; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Aggie (Lawrence "Lefty") Demmer, Esther (Arnold) Bockenstedt; Sally (Bob) Naber, and Dottie Maiers, Bill Naber and Elmer Willenbring.

My sympathies to all of you for the passing of Gene. Surely the loss you feel will be partially offset by the countless fond memories. I recall that he always seemed to get a kick out of the dumb things high school kids did.
