Eugene W. Wagner U.S. Coast Guard veteran of WWII and trustee of Grace Church in Newark, 96 Eugene W. Wagner, 96, of Hillside, N.J., passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 26, 2017. The visitation will be on Thursday, March 2, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Grace Church, 950 Broad St., Newark, N.J. 07102. The funeral service will be at 12:45 p.m. Arrangements by Growney Funeral Home (growneyfuneralhome.com), 1070 North Broad St., Hillside, N.J. Interment is at Graceland Memorial Park, Kenilworth, N.J. Eugene was the beloved husband of Miriam (nee Porter) Wagner; devoted father of Larry and his wife, Debbie, and Lee and his wife, Carla; loving grandfather of Joanna Canfield, Diana Martinez, Michael Lapp, and the late Robert Wagner, and great-grandfather of Dakota, Cheyenne and Hayley Wagner, Austin Koteje, Carlee , Jesse Lynn, John Jr., and Miriam Canfield, Jasmine Carter and Ricardo Martinez. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Born in Newark, N.J., Mr. Wagner was a lifelong resident of Hillside. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of the Hillside Senior Citizens Club and the Union Township Harmonica Club, past treasurer of the National Electroplating Society, and a lifetime member of Grace Church in Newark, serving as treasurer, liturgical minister, and trustee. He enjoyed any kind of painting. He loved to bake, build furniture, and also loved music. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Grace Church would be appreciated.
