We met in the 70's when I was a junior faculty member at Virginia Tech. We found many common interests and he looked after me like an elder brother. It turned out he was also at VT in earlier times and so, when I invited him for a sabbatical visit, he and his wife came for an extended period. We had many good times since then and I'll miss him very much.

I was shocked to learn of Prof Wu's death from my brother who is married to his eldest daughter. It was during their nuptials over twenty years ago, I recognized his intelligence, quick wit, devotion to family and career, and sense of humor. He was certainly uncharacteristically the college physics professor -- a fact I didn't know until later. I can only speculate how many of his students he guided to fulfilling careers, including medicine and science. An example of the modern Renaissance...

Fred Wu was a delightful and brilliant colleague. I was part of the 1980 Northeastern U delegation that included Fred. It was the first university exchange with China since US diplomatic recognition in 1979. Although Fred had not lived in China since he was a child, he still had relatives in China and was able to meet at least one of them on the trip.
