BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) - Ferenc Madl, who served as a Cabinet minister in Hungary's first post-communist government, then as the country's president, has died. He was 80 years old.

The President's Office says Madl, who lived in Budapest, died Sunday. The cause of death was not given.

Madl, who studied local and international law, was the author of 20 books, some of them about the process of European integration.

He earned a law degree in 1955 and was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. After communist rule ended in Hungary, he served as the nation's minister of education from 1993 to 1994, then held the largely ceremonial post of president from 2000 to 2005.

Madl, who was born on Jan. 29, 1931, is survived by his wife, Dalma, a son and three grandchildren.
