Fernando Manuel Garcia died at his residence at the age of 89. He was born in Laredo, Texas and moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1950. He had worked at Montgomery Wards, sold insurance for Woodmen of the World, been a clerk at Alamo Lumber and Supply, worked for Atlas Oil Surveying, been an instructor mechanic at Kelly AFB, and worked for the U.S. Post Office for over 35 years. Birthdays are eternities begun. His body has been lost to sight, but his soul has begun its spiritual eternity. For those who are mindful of the wonder of his life, these words are meant to relate to any kindred spirit, who so inquires, how idyllically rare the preciousness of his bounty and sincerity of his soul has been to his family, church, and community. These times now present no hindrance to find the words to express our thoughts which urge the mind to "faces and places" for love and being loved. He married Irene Dorothy Slaughter in Laredo on March 12, 1948 and they celebrated 67 years of marriage in 2015. She was and always will be his earnest life's purpose. For 27 years he drove to Prince of Peace Catholic Church with his monthly envelope donation and walked it from the parking lot to the staff. They all remembered him handing it to them and walking back slower every month. He weighed 93 pounds weakened by age, but he and his wife have always been devoted to their parish. While working at the main Post Office downtown, he would work overtime 18 hours a day before automation. He was proud of the Post Office and all the Post Masters. It gave him the financial resources that sent his children to collage and his wife.Irene became a second grade teacher and taught many students who eventually became prominent in their communities. She has a picture of all her students she taught. All this love and support Fernando attributed to the Post Office system where he worked to make them success as well as his family and community.
He is survived by 2 sons and their families, 5 grand children, 5 great grand children, 17 nieces and nephews, and 34 grand nieces and nephews. What was excellent in him felt like a part of all of us. The significations of his life becomes the expression to each of us that he was moved by powerful striving and with these thoughts that revere their spirit now. God Bless Him! No flowers are encouraged, but donations to the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 7893 Grissom Road, San Antonio, Texas,78251 is requested.
