Obituary

Marie Crowder

Talucah

Florence Marie Crowder, known as Marie (pronounced "My-Ree") by her close friends and family, was born October 18, 1926, and died January 3, 2012, at her home after a hard fought battle with congestive heart failure. She was the daughter of Maurice (known as Morris or MM) Maynard Crowder and Nell Cunningham Crowder. Her passing signifies the end of an era of community service by the Crowders of Talucah, Alabama.

Marie wore many "hats" during her 85 years of productive life and personified the passage of "it's not the destination, but the journey to that destination". She was a proud graduate of Cotaco High School and the University of Alabama and a very loyal "Roll Tide Fan". She worked side by side with her mother, Nell, in the farming operation of the Crowder Farm through 1972. Marie was always active in the community of Talucah and was one of the original charter members in the formation of the Talucah Volunteer Fire Department. She helped form and was also an active member in the local Community Watch. It was during this timeframe that she became known as "the Sheriff of Talucah". She co-authored a book of the history of Talucah. Marie was very active in the Genealogy Society and served on numerous committees throughout Morgan County.

In her passing, Marie leaves behind her church family at the Talucah Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Grant Turney (August 8, 1976) and is survived by her only son, Lonnie Joe Turney (his special friend, Sonya Swader and her family), two grandchildren, Robert Grant Turney and Marlene Turney Whiteley (her husband, Charlie) and one great- grandchild, Tyler Grant Whitely. Also of note, Marie was "un-officially" adopted by the Gaines family of Talucah and leaves her brothers/ sisters of Charlene, Hershel, and Waymon.

Marie Crowder was interred at Crowder Draper Cemetery on January 7th in a private graveside service that was officiated by both the Reverend Harold Fowler and the Reverend Ralph Snowden. The family of Marie Crowder extends a special thanks to Abercrombie Dairies for their efforts in prepping and hosting the funeral site.
