HERLIHY, Florence Entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 28, 2007, Florence Hynes Herlihy widow of Frederick William Herlihy. She was born in Wayland, MA a daughter of the late Michael and Florence Murphy Hynes on Wednesday, February 17, 1904. Mrs. Herlihy attended Nursing School in Boston, MA and was a Registered Nurse. "Miss Florence" will always be remembered for her love of family and her faith in God. She was raised under the watchful eyes of her older brothers, Tom and Bill, whom she loved deeply. She and her husband Fred moved to South Carolina in the 1930's with both Orangeburg and Edisto becoming their homes. After raising four children, Miss Florence was blessed to live and love and to help raise 3 more generations of grands thereafter. To those grands who lived nearby, she was known as "Gran-Gran Cookie", for a seeming perpetual supply of sweets were at hand. To those grands who lived further away, she was known as "Gran-Gran Beach", as she was synonymous with Edisto's salt air and sand. She was the one that taught them how to bring in a fish although to this day none of them have surpassed her ability. Miss Florence was active in parish life of both Holy Trinity Church in Orangeburg and St. Stephen and St. Frederick of Edisto. In the early "mission" days at Edisto, Holy Mass was held in the living room. She was a beacon of faith for her family and all around her. Miss Florence was a lover of all God's creation but had a special relation with flowers, both in their cultivation and enjoyment. She traveled extensively in her lifetime and was amazing in her understanding and knowledge of world events. Miss Florence was famous for her hospitality, friendliness and her incredible good humor. During World War II, she was known to have fed all the French pilots who trained near Orangeburg. Nary a priest visiting Edisto left hungry, literally for decades. Her laughter was her signature and was truly infectious. She brought good cheer and fond memories to all she encountered. A long and fulfilled life, for she filled the lives of her family and friends with faith, love, and great cheer. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Surviving are four children, Esther H. Tecklenburg of Charleston, Florence H. Finley of Coronado, CA, Robert Herlihy of Atlanta, GA and Frederick Herlihy of Mexico; a cousin, Dorothy Sanborn of Providence, RI; ten grandchildren, Henry Tecklenburg, III, Fred and Julie Tecklenburg, John and Sandy Tecklenburg, Paul and Cindy Tecklenburg, all of Charleston, Michael Tecklenburg of Washington, DC, Anthony and Margaret Herlihy of Fallbrook, CA, Steve and Ella Herlihy, Dempsey and Ted Werthman, Vicky and Lee Baker all of Atlanta, GA, and Cindy and Cody Webster of Hanford, CA. 23 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; and dear friend Evalina Brown. The relatives and friends of Mrs. Florence H. Herlihy are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM Saturday, March 3, 2007 at St. Frederick and St. Stephen Catholic Church, Edisto Island. The Rite of Committal will be at 3:00 P.M. in Orangeburg Memorial Park, Orangeburg, SC. The family has requested memorials be made to the Edisto Island Open Land Trust or St. Frederick and St. Stephen Church, PO Box 602, Edisto Island, SC 29438. Arrangements by JAMES A. McALISTER FUNERAL HOME 766-1365. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.

Not sure what to say?

To all friends and family of our "Grandmother Beach" - It is because of my grandmother that I do not fear getting old. In fact, if I can live and laugh nearly as much as she did, I look forward to it!

A delightful lady who made me feel very much at home in her home. I'm certain that God has big plans for her, and will capitalize on her many talents and attributes.

Gran Gran Cookie, may she rest in peace, and I am blessed to have been so close to her spirit. We felt as one -- I am honored to be the eldest great grandchild and her presence brought so many gifts to my life. I am inspired by her wisdom and passion for life and to make the world a better place. Looking back, she taught me how to have strength and determination. I appreciate every opportunity to learn and grow and I am inspired by her generosity and faith. I am thankful for the times that...

"Granma Cookie" was such a delightful lady. I had the pleasure of meeting her a couple of times and have very fond memories of her. I am praying for your family during this time.

John, Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at your loss. Her life's story is one of incredible giving and your family is rich because of her. What wonderful memories you have to share and enjoy.

I grew up and spent 45 years of my spending my summers next door to Mrs.H. at Edisto. My parents spent afternoons on her deck talking to her. I watched her fish every morning. She yelled at me to turn down my stereo daily. I watched all the grands grow up and play under her watchful eye. There was a lot of love in that house and a lot of happy times and memories for everyone in her life. She insisted on it!
It won't be the same not being able to wave at Mrs. H. every morning and getting...

You are in my thoughts and prayers; may the love and comfort of our Lord be with you always.
