FLORENCE M. McKENNA

She was one of the most interesting people I have ever had occasion to work with/for. A sharp mind, steely disposition and magnificent sense of humor, I am sad to learn of her passing.

Please accept my sympathy on the loss of your sister. Florence was (and remains) an icon in the history of the University of Pittsburgh Libraries.

I’ve worked with the ULS for some 40 years. I mark time by those fellow travelers who have shared something of their selves with me. Surprisingly, there have been more than I expected. My sympathy to you, on the passing of your sister. I also worked under Ms. McKenna, and I will always remember her. She was a tough manager, but you always knew exactly where you stood with her.

Please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of Florence. I worked for her and with her for many years in Tech Services of Hillman Library and I enjoyed working with her. She was avery special lady and will be missed.

Florence McKenna was a longtime member of the University Library System staff at the University of Pittsburgh. She worked first as Head of the Langley Library (biology and psychology), then became Head of all of Technical Services for the whole library system, and finally Associate Director of all Libraries by the mid-1980s. She served with distinction and was greatly admired by all staff she managed, as well as administrators and members of the academic community.
