Florence M. Smith, age 78, of Spring Street in Farmington, died April 2, 2009, at Wentworth Douglass Hospital, Dover.

Born August 18, 1930 in Rochester, NH, she was the daughter of the late Ivory and Nancy (Brock) Young. After being raised in Rochester, she lived in Farmington for over 30 years.

Before retiring, she was employed as a shoe worker for the former Jameson Shoe Company in Farmington, NH.

Florence enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children: James Smith and wife Robin Smith of Farmington, Bobby Smith and wife Tammy Smith of East Rochester, Ray Smith and wife Donna Smith of East Rochester, George Smith and Glorene Smith of Farmington, Billy Smith of Farmington, Bertha and husband Kevin Howard of Farmington, Dot and husband Norman Parent of Farmington, Judy and husband Al Philbrick of Rochester and Nancy and husband Roy Gale of Groton, CT, 3 brothers: George Young, Clarence Young of Rochester and Ralph Young, 18 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Raymond I. Smith, Sr. and a Step-Mother: Rina Drapeau.

Graveside funeral service will be held in the spring at the Pine Grove Cemetary in Farmington, to be announced. Arrangements are in the care of the Peaslee Funeral Home 24 Central Street Farmington. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032. Yes.. I have memories in my pocket, although most are old and worn… But I pull them out from time to time just the same. Ma was a very special person in my life and will always be. She was amazing.

And yes – life is like an onion and sometimes you cry. At the same time realizing that the layer that has been worn away will never return.

I believe the only one who is happy about this is the Ol’ Man, and perhaps Ma herself. I’m certain living without him was hardest on her...
