Florence (Dot) Thomas of Sioux Falls, SD died Thursday, August 24, 2017 just shy of her 99th birthday.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00, Monday, August 28, 2017 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, SD. The family invites you to join them for refreshments and fellowship following the service.

Florence Marie Devick (Dot) was born September 16, 1918 to Saebjorn and Amanda Devick. Dot was raised in Colton, SD with her 7 siblings, Harold, Sara, Norman, Perry, Alma, John Stanley (Bud), and Mable Ione (Sis).

She graduated from Colton High in 1936 and earned her BA from Augustana College in 1940. On March 23, 1941 Dot and Russell Thomas married at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. They had six children, Julie, Lesa, Steven, Jeffrey, Michael and Jane. During World War II Dot worked as an executive secretary at John Morrell. When Russ came home their mutual focus was family. Dot was involved in the church and was invited to help form a new Lutheran church in Sioux Falls. She accepted that challenge and became one of the founders of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church which initially held its services at Augustana College. She spent many years teaching Sunday school and coordinating teachers at the church.  Dot was hired and became Parish Education Director at Our Savior’s. She taught confirmation, was a board member of Lutherans Outdoors, was instrumental in the development of the Camping programs, Boundary waters canoe trips, Bible school trips to Rosebud reservation, and Youth leagues including those for special needs kids. She was also very involved in the Augustana Alumni Association and all the events at Augie.

Dot and Russ loved camping with their children took them to many of the National Parks. They also renovated a lake cabin on Lake Carlos, Alexandria and hosted large extended family reunions.

Not sure what to say?

I took care of Dot for over a decade.
She always asked me to stay with her,
And move in with her, at her home, at Waterford at All Saints, and finally at Prince of Peace. She said one evening she had lived w me longer than anyone, even longer than Russ, her husband.
I was her best friend, cared for her, bought her clothes, helped her enjoy life,
Ate w her in the evening and looked out for her.
Today I take care of other elder adults.
She was one of my most...

Dot Thomas was such a positive and inspiring influence on the youth at Our Saviors. Our family benefited from her smile and energy as she assisted Pastor Engh in summer camps we attended at Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Shetek, and the Minnesota boundary waters canoe trip. Such happy memories of her.
Condolences from the Shelver family: Janet Shelver, Stan, Nancy, & Virginia

My sympathies to your family. It was a joy to serve and help take care of Dot. She led a wonderful life and always shared a smile and a story, and maybe even a little advise. Kristin-you had asked about the poem we had with the Mother's Day hand pictures. Here it is: "Mom's Hands" My hands have grown older through the years, And they have wiped many tears. They held you when you were young and wiped A tear to keep you strong. So, hang this on your wall to view, Remember that I will always...

So sorry to hear of your mother's death. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry I won't be able to attend her services.

Dot Thomas was a force of nature. I always will remember her with a smile on her face, and with enthusiasm for anything. She and Pastor Enga were the adults on the canoe trip which I took as a 16 year old, and Mrs. Thomas was in charge of food and cooking. I remember her very well, bending over a fold out reflector oven, and baking nut bread with only the help of the sun! It impressed me, and I'm still fascinated by solar energy! She was tireless, funny and a totally good person. ...

To the family and friends of Mrs. Thomas, please accept my condolence and know that God cares for you. 1 Peter 5:8.

Sincerely,
Jackie

Heartfelt condolences to the family. I remember a time when Dot was cooking in her kitchen and my brother Mike Collins and Steve and Julie Thomas were hosting another of her birthdays. It is one of those times in life when saying many happy returns came true! Bless her heart and may God comfort each of you.
